The Last Payphone

But every now and then you wish for one more day.
The last payphone in this town still waits for a call,
For all the names we still recall written on these walls.
Some numbers disappear; some people do too.
I'd give one last quarter just to hear from you.
I almost picked the receiver up just to hear the empty line,
Like maybe for a second I could turn back time.
But the wind moved through the cornfields,
And the silence answered back.
Some things keep moving forward; some things never come back.
