Kick It Over Before August

She leans on the gate and says,
"You're taking it long." I tell her,
"Give me one more week and I'll get it on." She smiles like she already knows I'm lying a little,
But she stays,
And that's the part that keeps me in the middle.
Papa is dead, I know you hear the sound.
We hammered out the dents on this same ground.
If the engine holds and the sun keeps warm,
We'll cross the hills and reach the water before the storm.
Kick it over, let the old engine wait.
I'll ride it to the lake before the sun will break.
Dad, I fixed your bike, now let me take it out.
